RW ARMSTRONG ROLE // Design and construction supervision.
DETAILS // Design - build of new dual carriageway concrete highway.
RW Armstrong is providing full design and construction supervision services for the design-build construction of a 58 km section of the Baku-Russian federation border highway, R-1 (KM 135+00 to KM 193+00).
This highway will be the primary link to Russia from Baku and the project converts the existing two lane roadway into a four-lane section on both new and existing alignments. The project contains an estimated twelve bridge structures, five interchanges, two roundabout intersections (at the Russian border), dozens of box bridges, and almost two hundred culvert crossings.
RW Armstrong will perform the services of this project in three distinct steps:
In an effort to expedite the overall schedule of the project, RW Armstrong developed a project-wide design and construction schedule that would allow this concrete roadway to be designed and constructed in 18 months. This process evaluated multiple alignments to minimize haul routes, impacts to property owners, structure costs and utility relocations. The project was then divided into 5km sections with two sections (approximately 10km) being designed per month.
Construction would begin just thirty days from the start of the design process. Construction services will be provided to ensure that the construction of the roadway system is in general compliance with the construction plans, standards, and specifications.
